real distinction

In my gift-ontology, real distinction means the distinction is in reality, not merely in our concepts, but it does not mean separability or independent existence as three beings. The persons are really distinct. That is a non-negotiable doctrinal commitment. Yet the real distinction is non-compositional: it is grounded in relations of origin, not in parts. Real distinction therefore must be paired with the claim that each person is wholly God and that the divine essence is indivisible. The reality of distinction is secured by origin-fromness and relative opposition. The unity is secured by simplicity and inseparable operations. This term must be handled with analogical discipline: “real” is not “same-category as creaturely individuals.”
