Perichoretic Simplicity

Term 1 in the cross-disciplinary ontological stack

Definition

Perichoretic simplicity is the claim that God is one simple act that is personally full, such that the Father’s originless giving, the Son’s receptive redonation, and the Spirit’s shared communion are not additions to an underlying essence but the very way the one essence is itself, with no second act in God and with all created difference arising as modes of receiving this act.

Cross-disciplinary gloss

Treat this as the system’s kernel, an invariant core that never forks or versions. Everything that runs, runs within its guarantees. It is not a switch you toggle but a fixed point that remains what it is whenever you meet it, the condition of possibility for every higher operation. In computational idiom it behaves as something that does not change when reapplied and that ranges over the whole field. In philosophical idiom it is where explanation stops.

Theology

Perichoretic simplicity names one simple act that is at the same time tri-personal life. The Father gives without origin, the Son receives and returns, the Spirit is the shared fruition. These relations are identical with the divine essence, not decorations on top of it. Nothing further is required in God to pass from unity to Trinity or from eternity to creation. What is necessary in God is God Himself, what is free is everything else. Perichoresis speaks of mutual indwelling, not of a new origin beyond those relations of paternity and spiration that constitute the divine persons.

Ontology

Speaking this way commits us to relation as the primitive reality. Being is identified by provenance, so persons are subsistent relations rather than substances that later acquire relations. The divine act is necessary, while every created distinction shows up as a mode of receiving that act. Created facts are grounded as participations in the giver, never as conditions that delimit the giver. There are no parts in God, and what we call parts in creatures are ordered receptions rather than fragments of the divine. Eternity is the non-successive presence of the one act, which means that newness occurs in receivers and not as alteration in God. Primary causality and creaturely causes are not rivals, since the same effect can be wholly from the giver and truly from the participant.

Why this pane helps

Stating these commitments in natural language lets different fields hear the same music in their own idiom without losing the theological center. Philosophers can see what is primitive and where contingency lives, scientists can see why stable laws look stable without denying form and finality, and theologians can guard the confession that there is no second act in God. It also disciplines method by letting any question be traced as gift, then reception, then mode, which keeps the analysis from slipping back into talk of hidden substrates. Most of all it keeps the analogy honest. The stack is an image that clarifies, prayer and participation are the reality that sanctifies, and the point of the image is to lead mind and life back into that reality.
